CRUISING GROUND MANUAL

Places for a quieter paddle

A sheltered yacht anchorage is not automatically a good paddleboard arena. Open roadsteads with long fetch, water-ski lanes, and steep katabatic downslope gusts turn a casual paddle into an exhausting upwind grind. Seek enclosed topography with natural windbreaks and strict speed limits.

REGIONAL ANCHORAGE PROFILES

Sheltered-Water Destination Panels

Four benchmark cruising grounds where coastal geometry creates reliable flat-water corridors accessible directly from an anchored yacht or visitor mooring buoy.

DALMATIAN ARCHIPELAGO, CROATIA

1. Polače & Pomena (Mljet Island) + Krka Approaches

Protected by the off-lying islets of Moračnik, Tajnik, Ovrat, and Kobrava, Polače bay offers nearly 360-degree wave shelter on the northwest corner of Mljet. Yachts moored on ecological buoys or anchored in 8–12 meters off the Roman palace ruins can launch SUPs at dawn to explore the shallow, crystal-clear channels between the islets where deep-keeled vessels cannot pass.

Local Wind Hazard NE Bura Downslope Gusts; Afternoon NW Maestral
Tidal Range Minimal (0.3 – 0.4 m)
Regulatory Note National Park Ticket Required; No Motor Vessels in Inner Lakes
BALEARIC ISLANDS, SPAIN

2. Fornells Bay & Cala Addaya (Menorca)

Menorca's northern coast features deeply incised inlets. Badia de Fornells stretches nearly 4 kilometers inland with a narrow entrance mouth that blocks open Mediterranean swell, while neighboring Port d'Addaya offers winding shallow fingers lined with limestone ledges and pine woods. Paddlers can skirt the western shore of S'Aranal before the midday thermal breeze builds.

Local Wind Hazard North Tramontana Funnelling Down the Inlet
Seabed & Conservation Protected Posidonia Oceanica; Use Regulated Moorings
Swim Zone Rule Enter Beaches Only via Marked Yellow-Buoy Channels
WESTERN ENGLISH CHANNEL, UK

3. Helford River & Newtown Creek (Solent)

Drowned river valleys (rias) in Cornwall and Devon—along with nature-reserve estuaries like Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight—provide wooded banks that filter out prevailing southwesterly winds. Once the yacht secures to a visitor buoy or drops anchor in the main pool, a shallow-draft SUP with a flexible river fin can glide up Frenchman's Creek or Clamerkin Lake on the top two hours of the rising flood tide.

Tidal Strategy Paddle Inland on Late Flood; Return on Early Ebb
Water Temp Gear 2 mm Neoprene Long Jane/John + Quick-Release Waist Belt
Wildlife Etiquette Maintain 50 m Clearance from Roosting Waders & Seals
IONIAN SEA, GREECE

4. Meganisi North Harbours (Atherinos, Abelike & Vathy)

East of Lefkas, the northern shoreline of Meganisi splits into a series of long, finger-like calas where yachts moor stern-to the olive-lined shore with long floating lines. Early mornings (06:00 to 10:00) inside Kapali and Atherinos are mirror-flat before the northwestern Maestro sets in around 13:30, making them ideal for perimeter paddles and sea-cave inspection with a mask stowed under the deck bungee.

Stern-Line Hazard Watch for Taut Polypropylene Shore Lines at Neck Height
Footwear Needed 3 mm Hard-Sole Reef Boots (Sea Urchin Spines on Rocks)
Afternoon Pattern Stow Boards by 13:00 Ahead of Afternoon Gusts

Reading Wind Shadows and Submarine Hazards from the Cockpit

False Lee Shores & Acceleration Zones

High mountainous islands (such as Corsica, Hvar, or Ithaca) often appear glassy within 80 meters of the cliff base while a 20-knot gradient wind blows overhead. A paddler who strays outside that narrow wind-shadow line crosses an invisible shear boundary into whitecaps and rapid offshore drift. Never paddle beyond the wind-shadow line painted on the water surface unless you have tested paddling back upwind first.

Shoreline Landings & Hull Protection

Unlike rotomolded polyethylene kayaks, inflatable PVC paddleboards puncture or score deeply if grounded onto sharp volcanic scoria, barnacle shelves, or broken oyster beds. Step off the board in knee-deep water before the fin grounds out, lift the board by the center handle, and set it down on soft sand, wet seaweed, or a folded dry bag above the wash line.
